À cerca de dois meses tive a ideia de escrever no blog sobre Mulheres autoras de livros de Fantasia que eu gosto de ler. Especialmente porque quando a comecei a ler livros do género não era assim muito fácil de encontrar livros escritos por mulheres (apesar de eles existirem). Achei que seria uma ideia diferente e interessante de explorar. A ideia era partilhar as minhas escritoras preferidas e alguns dos livros que já li delas. Rapidamente percebi que post apenas não era suficiente para partilhar toda a informação que eu queria escrever. Por isso tornei esta ideia numa série de posts sobre Autoras mulheres (porque comecei a pensar e não quero só falar de escritoras de fantasia, mas de outras escritoras também.).

É claro que tinha que começar por uma das minhas preferidas - Juliet Marillier. Porquê? Porque ela consegue combinar folklore, factos históricos e fantasia e criar histórias que me deixam completamente agarrada aos livros.

I had this idea awhile ago (actually a couple months ago) of writing a blog post about Female Fantasy Authors that I like and enjoy reading. Mainly because many years ago, when I started to read fantasy books it wasn't that easy to find female authors (although they existed) and only through the years I was able to discover many of them. I thought it would be fun to share some of my favourite and briefly speak about some of the books they wrote that I have read. Soon I realized that one blog post wasn't enough to have all the information I wanted to share about each author. My goal is to monthly (for awhile) share about one Female Author (because there are others that I want to speak about that don't exactly write fantasy and I want to include them in this series).

Of course I had to start with Juliet Marillier because she is one of my favourite authors of ALL time. Why, you may wonder? Because she combines folklore, historic facts and fantasy to tell some of most compelling stories. 



Uma das séries da autora mais conhecidas é Sevenwaters. Começou por ser uma trilogia e acabou numa série de seis livros. Estes livros são sobre uma família e um local - Sevenwaters. A religião da época é Celta e estas histórias estão ligadas ao folklore Irlandês e Celta. Acontece antes e durante o início da ocupação Romana da Britania. De livro para livro, de geração em geração tomamos conhecimento de como as pessoas poderiam ter vivido na época, mas também como o mito, folklore, magia e religião as afectava. Não se enganam como o que digo, estes livros são de fantasia (com algum romance à mistura e actos de heroísmo) são repletos de magia e fadas (ou faes) mas o piscar de olhos à realidade e a acontecimentos históricos torna-os ainda melhores aos meus olhos.

Filha da Floresta é o primeiro livro da série, e é sobre Sorcha. É inspirado no conto tradicional Seis Cisnes. Sorcha têm sete irmãos mais velhos que foram transformados em cisnes pela sua madrasta. A única chance que ela têm de os tornar humanos outra vez é ela criar seis camisolas feitas de urtigas, ao longo desta árdua tarefa ela não pode falar, nem uma palavra sequer. Se ela o fizer os seus irmãos nunca mais serão humanos. Isto é só uma pequena (ínfima parte) do que é a história deste livro. Não quero estragar-vos o livro. Os livros seguintes da série são sobre parentes da Sorcha. No Filho das Sombras a personagem principal é Liadan, uma das filhas de Sorcha. A Filha da Profecia é sobre a neta mais velha- Fianne. Os outros três livros - Herdeiro de Sevenwaters, A Vidente de Sevenwaters e A Chama de Sevenwaters são sobre as outras três netas de Sorcha. Conseguem ver o padrão? As personagens principais são mulheres, sempre diferentes umas das outras, mas sempre fortes. Ainda não li o último, mas tanta conversa sobre estes livros que até fiquei com vontade de o ler.

One of her most known series is Sevenwaters. It started with a trilogy but ended to be a series with 6 books. These books are about a family and a place - Sevenwaters. The main religion at the time was Celtic, and these stories are deeply connected with Irish folklore and Celtic. It happens before and during the Roman occupation of Britain (also known as Britannia). From book to book, generation through generation you have a sense of how people might have lived, but also how myth, folklore, magic and religion could affect people. Don't be mistaken by what I said, these are fantasy books (with romance and choices that will make aww) with magic and faes involved but that little glint of reality is what makes them even better to me.

Daughter of the Forest is the first book of the series, is about Sorcha and deeply inspired in the six swans folk tale. Sorcha six older brothers are turned into swans by their stepmother. Their only chance to become human again is by Sorcha making six shirts out of Nettles (a very spiky plant) while remain in silence. She can only talk again after their brothers are human again, if she speak before, they will remain swans forever. This is just a small part of the plot but if I'll tell more, I would be spoiling it! You might be able to find a bigger and better synopsis on Goodreads (link on the name of the book).
What's interesting also in the next books is that they happen with Sorcha relatives. In Son of the Shadows is about one of Sorcha daugthers - Liadan. Child of the Prophecy is about Fianne, Sorcha oldest granddaughter.  The other three books - Heir to Sevenwaters, Seer of Sevenwaters and Flame of Sevenwaters are about the other three granddaughters. Do you see a pattern? The main characters are always female, they are always different from each others, but also always strong and fierce. I haven't read the last one yet, but all this talk is making me want to pick the book!


A minha segunda série favorita da autora é Wildwood. Estes dois livros são ainda mais inspirados em folklore e lendas (daí estar nos meus favoritos).
O primeiro é Danças na Floresta e é bastante inspirado no conto tradicional As 12 Princesas Bailarinas. A personagem principal é a Jena (segunda filha mais velha de cinco irmãs), o seu animal de estimação que é um sapo e os seus primos. O cenário são os bosques da Transilvânia! Podem contar com fadas (ou faes), vampiros e imensos pequenos detalhes inspirados nos mais variados contos tradicionais. O segundo livro é O Segredo de Cibelle - e é sobre a irmã Paula. Paula têm uma paixão por conhecimento e livros, o que naqueles tempos não era muito comum para uma mulher. Gosto como este tema é abordado no livro, e claro sem esquecer toda a fantasia e um pouco de romance à mistura. (até aparece um pirata português!).

My second favourite series by the author is Wildwood. This one is even more folklore inspired. 
The first book is called Wildwood Dancing and it's mainly inspired by 12 Dancing Princesses folk tale. The main character is Jena (the second eldest of five sisters), her frog and her cousins. The scenery are the Transylvanian woods. You can count on faes, vampires and loads of folklore inspired nicknack's. The second book is Cybele's Secret - it's about one of the other sisters - Paula. Paula has a passion for knowledge and books, which at time wasn't very common for a woman. I really like how this theme is approached in the book without forgetting all the fantasy and a bit of romance too.


As Crónicas de Bridei é uma trilogia sobre o Rei Bridei, rei dos Pictos. Não existe muita coisa escrita sobre os Pictos, acredita-se que era uma confederação de tribos que vivia na zona norte e este da Escócia durante o final da Idade Ferro e no início da Idade Média (mais info. na Wikipedia). A autora pesquisou sobre a época, o que não conseguiu encontrar inventou, e de uma maneira brilhante. Ao longo dos três livros acompanhamos a vida de Bridei, antes de ser rei e durante o seu reinado. Mas para mim ele acaba por não ser uma das personagens mais relevantes. Desde o primeiro livro - Espelho Negro que Tuala é uma das personagens mais interessantes. Mas minha personagem preferida só têm maior destaque no segundo - A Espada de Fortriu e terceiro livro O Poço das Sombras, e o seu nome é Faolan.
Bridei Chronicles is a trilogy about King Bridei - king of the Picts. There are not a lot of written records about this people. «The Picts were a tribal confederation of peoples who lived in what is today eastern and northern Scotland during the Late Iron Age and Early Medieval periods.» (in Wikipedia). Marillier researched and contacted researchers to know more about this time period, but what she didn't know she invented, and in a brilliant way. In these three books we accompany Bridei's life - before being king, and when he is king. But to me he is not the most important character in the books. From book one - The Dark Mirror that Tuala is one of the most interesting characters. But my absolute favourite character is more featured in the second - Blade of Fortriu and third book - The Well of Shades and his name his Faolan. 


A Saga das Ilhas Brilhantes é sobre Vikings! Tenho que confessar que foram as capas destes livros que me atraíram para os livros da autora. O primeiro livro chama-se O Filho de Thor e o segundo A Máscara da Raposa. É me um pouco difícil resumir ou dar uma pequena sinopse destes livros. O que mais gosto neles são alguns pequenos detalhes que provavelmente nada a têm a ver com o geral da história. No primeiro livro aprendemos sobre o funcionamento da civilização Viking. Ainda durante este livro algumas personagens partem para as Ilhas Brilhantes. Mas ao estabelecerem-se na ilha as coisas não correm tão bem como eles estavam à espera. Sim há folklore e mitos envolvidos, há magia e fortes personagens do sexo feminino. Até têm selkies!!

The Light Isles Series are about Vikings! I have to confess that these were the books covers that attracted me to explore and later read this author. The first book it's called Wolfskin and the second one is Foxmask. I wanted to say something about these books but there are so many amazing little details about them that it's actually very hard for me to tell you more about the story line of them. In the first book you learn how Viking civilization worked. During that book they set out sail for the Light Isles. But there things don't go as smooth as they thought it would be. Yes there is folklore involved, yes there is magic, and strong female characters. There are even selkies!!


Juliet Marillier até agora escreveu mais duas séries Shadowfell (Shadowfell, O Voo do Corvo e A Voz) e Blackthorn e Grim (O Lago dos Sonhos, Tower of Thorns, Den of Wolves) que ainda não li. Também têm mais dois livros publicados Prickle Moon (uma coleção de contos) e Sangue-do-Coração (em que nos conta a história de Caitrin, uma escriba).

She also wrote two more series Shadowfell ( first book Shadowfell, second Raven Flight and the third The Caller) and Blackthorn & Grim (first book Dreamer's Pool, second book Tower of Thorns and third Den of Wolves) that I haven't read yet. She has also two stand alone books Prickle Moon (which is a collection of short stories) and Heart's Blood (that tells us the story of Caitrin, a scribe).

Já todos sabem que tenho uma obsessão com O Senhor dos Anéis e com a obra do J. R. R. Tolkien.

You all know that I'm quit obsessed with Lord of the Rings and most of J. R. R. Tolkien work.
You have seen the books I owned and DVD's with the extended versions.
But something that lacked in my collection was the actual books in English.




Também já sabem da minha recente paixão por livros em segunda mão. Às vezes é interessante ter um livro com história nele mesmo.

Estes foram os livros que encontrei, com capas ilustradas. ❤
São uma edição americana de 1969! As capas? São infames, o editor não deu tempo suficiente à ilustradora Barbara Remington para ler os livros e perceber sobre o que eles eram. O resultado? Umas capas estranhas e peculiares que pouco têm a ver com o que conhecemos do livro. Eu adorei-as, ainda antes de descobrir esta história. Além disso nunca me passaria pela cabeça que estes livros tivessem 50 anos!! Para além de umas páginas amarelo/alaranjadas estão em óptimo estado.

These were the books that I found and with illustrated covers. ❤
The books are the american edition from 1969. The covers? Where infamous because the editor didn't gave enough time to the illustrator - Barbara Remington - to actually read the books before illustrating them. It resulted in a quirky and weird cover that little has to do with the books. But I loved them, even before knowing all of this story. It would never cross my mind that these books have almost 50 years!! Apart from really yellow/orange pages they are in great state.

Esta sexta-feira é um dia particularmente especial, especialmente se também fore fan d' O Hobbit e d' O Senhor dos Anéis - é dia de ler Tolkien!! E a pensar nisso achei que era o dia perfeito para partilhar a minha paixão pelos livros do autor.

This Friday is going to be a very important day specially if you're a fan of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings - it's Read Tolkien day!! With that in mind I thought it was the perfect date for me to share my love for Tolkien books.



The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings (Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers, Return of the King)
O Hobbit e O Senhor dos Anéis (A Irmandade do Anel, Duas Torres, Regresso do Rei)


Estas são as minhas primeiras edições d' O Hobbit e d' O Senhor dos Anéis. Adoro as ilustrações da capa (apesar de se perder um pouco os detalhes das mesmas na capa do livro). De momento ando à caça de umas versões em inglês. Especialmente porque a seguir a ouvir as versões audio do livro fiquei com imensa vontade de reler tudo mas em inglês.
Por norma não sou a favor de voltar a comprar livros que já tenho - e às vezes até livros que já li e não tenho, excepto alguns livros (Trilogia Mundos Paralelos do Philip Pullman e O Ciclo de Terramar de Ursula K. Le Guin).

These are my first editions of the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. They are in portuguese and have beautiful artwork on the cover. I'm currently on the hunt for some pretty english versions. Specially since I've heard the audiobook version in English that I want that my next re-read of these books to be done in English. 
Although by norm I'm against of re-purchasing books that I already own there are a few exceptions (His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman and Earthsea Cycle series by Ursula K. Le Guin)

The Lord of the Rings - movie adaptation (extended version)

Nem todos gostamos de ler, e para ser honesta Tolkien não é para qualquer leitor. A minha paixão por esta série/mundo começou com os filmes. A caixa arquivadora das versões extensas dos filmes é linda e parecem-se livros! Estou ansiosa para que as adaptações extensas d' O Hobbit saiam (um preço mais simpático) para as adicionar à minha colecção de Tolkien.

Not all of us like to read books, and to be honest Tolkien is not for all readers. My passion for this series started with movie adaptations. The box set of the extended version are beautiful and actually look like books! I can't wait for all the extended versions of The Hobbit movie adaptations are released (in a more suitable price) so I can also add them to my Tolkien collection.




The Art of the Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien

Recentemente descobri que Tolkien não só escreveu O Hobbit e O Senhor dos Anéis, mas que também os ilustrou da capa à contracapa. Fiquei sem palavras, e nas minhas pesquisas acabei por encontrar estes dois livros que tem desenhos originais e que desvendam um pouco mais sobre o processo criativo do autor.

Recently I discovered that Tolkien didn't just write The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, but also had initially illustrated them from cover to back cover. My mind was blown away, specially when I start to research and found out these two books that have the original drawings and analysis of his creative process.

Não são fantásticos estes livros? E vocês também são fãs de Tolkien?
Aren't amazing these books? What about you, are you a Tolkien fan too? 

Há mais de 10 anos atrás apaixonei-me por uma capa de um livro. Esse livro era O Telescópio de Âmbar escrito pelo Philip Pullman. Demorei algum tempo a perceber que afinal aquele livro era o terceiro de uma trilogia (Mundos Paralelos), especialmente porque o via sempre sozinho sem os outros dois. Eu não queria ler os outros dois, apenas queria ler aquele. Acabei por ceder e comprei o primeiro em português. Li-o. Foi ok. É um bom livro de ficção, mas tinhas tantas questões ficaram no ar, além disso eu queria era ler livros com acção rápida. E esta trilogia não é assim. Tens que ler com tempo para compreender todos os detalhes. No entanto apesar dessa experiência continuei a ter uma paixão pel' O Telescópio de Âmbar e recentemente decidi voltar a pegar na trilogia.
Excepto que este "recentemente" foi há um ano atrás. Ouvi o livro audio e adorei. Mas estes livros eram daqueles que queria mesmo ter em objecto físico e palpável. Há qualquer coisa de diferente nisso, em vez de apenas uma versão digital.

Como decidi que agora queria a trilogia em inglês comecei a procurar pela mesma. A capa por que me apaixonei já desapareceu das livrarias à imenso tempo, e até mesmo a edição que tenho d' Os Reinos do Norte (editado pela Editora Presença, colecção Via Láctea) já não existe à venda.
Tinha preferência por livros em segunda mão. Apesar de ser mais barato comprar livros em Inglês do que em Português, em segunda mão ainda ficam mais em conta. Na primeira procura encontrava o segundo e o terceira livro na mesma edição, mas não o primeiro. Em outras edições faltavam outros livros. Confesso que comecei a sentir-me um pouco frustrada. Por norma não sou tão esquisita com as edições dos livros. A única coisa em sou esquisita é que prefiro livros de capa mole aos de capa dura. Mas nestes livros queria mesmo que a as capas estivessem em sintonia.
Encontrei estas edições, comprei-os, mas não estava convencida. As fotos dos livros não eram as melhores, e também não havia muitos detalhes sobre os livros. Mas estes eram os únicos que eram da mesma edição e foram estes que acabei por escolher.

More than 10 years ago I fell in love by a book cover. That book cover was The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman. It was the first time that I actually remember to fall in love for a book cover. And I didn't found the book in a fancy place, it was just the supermarket. It took me some time to actually realise it was the third book of a trilogy, specially because the book was usually alone and without the other two. I didn't want to read the other two, I wanted to read that one. I bite the bullet and bought the first book in Portuguese. I read it. At the time it was ok. I mean in terms of fiction was good, but so many things we're answered and at the time I only wanted to read fast paced books. And this trilogy is not like that. You have to take your time to understand all the details. My love and curiosity for The Amber Spyglass continued and recently I decided to give a go to this trilogy again.
Except that this was a year ago. I listened to the audio book and love it. But these books were one that I really wanted to have in my shelf, and that I wanted to grab the book and read. There is something different in doing so, instead of just reading it on digital device or just listen to it.

Since I wanted to now have some English editions I was searching to have the three books in the same edition. The cover I love in portuguese as long disappeared from the market, and even the one edition that I have of the the Northern Lights in portuguese is from a different edition from the one's that I liked.
I was on a hunt for these books and I would prefer to have them in second hand, depending on the final price, or even depending if all the covers were in the same edition. The first one that I liked I wasn't able to find first book, in another one I couldn't find another. I was getting frustrated. I'm not very picky, but one thing I was sure, I didn't want hard cover books (one day I have to write something about hard cover books versus paperback ones). I wanted all the covers to sort of match.
I found these editions. I wasn't very convinced, the photos of them weren't the best, and there were not many informations about the edition it self. But there were the three books and that's what I wanted.

1. Northern Lights (also know as The Golden Compass)
     Os Reinos do Norte (ou a Bússola Dourada no Brasil)


Estou tão contente por ter escolhido estas edições. Quando abri a caixa em que eles vieram até dei pulos de alegria. As capas são LINDAS! Parecem desenhos feitos em linogravura ou até mesmo gravura (técnicas que são manuais e difíceis de chegar ao nível de perfeição que estas capas têm). A quantidade de pequenos desenhos e detalhes é fantástica! E até no início de cada capítulo há um pequeno desenho.
Descobri que estas edições são de coleccionador!! As capas são em papel com textura (que apesar não ser o mais resistente ao manuseamento) é um dos meus acabamentos preferidos nas capas de livros. Além disso os títulos tanto na capa como na espinha do livro são em tinta metalizada (um outro detalhe que não tinha conseguido perceber pelas fotos).

I'm so glad that I've picked up these books in these editions. The covers are beautiful! They look like the drawings were made in lino-cut or maybe wood engraving by hand. But despite that they are full of details! And even on the beginning of each chapter there are small drawings.
I even found out that these editions we're some collector's edition! Which makes sense. The cover is in textured paper which is something isn't very usual, but it's one of my favourites sort of covers.
There is no other treatment to the paper, except the title of the books are in metallic colours (another detail that I wasn't able to see in the photos when I purchased the books).

Estas edições foram publicadas em 2007, no Reino Unido pela editora Scholastic Children's Book e são de capa mole.
A trilogia em Portugal chama-se Mundos Paralelos (o que conta um pouco do que se vai passar nos livros, mas enfim, o nome em Inglês é bem mais misterioso). Nas capas dos livros está presente o nome da trilogia, o que é extremamente raro (e uma chatice quando a pessoa não conhece o livro ou a ordem da trilogia ou série).

These editions were published in UK by Scholastic Children's Book in 2007, and are paperback
This trilogy is called His dark Materials (I don't know why yet...) but I found this little detail in the covers with the name of trilogy which I found lovely, specially because most of the times in series and trilogies you never know the name of it unless you make a research on it.
