I have been reading a lot, mainly because I'm motivated by the summer reading marathons. At this point I'm even thinking that it might be possible to do all the reading challenges!

1) O Assassinato de Roger Ackroyd

Foi uma leitura rápida, visto que já conhecia o enredo através da série. É mais um caso com o Poirot. O detective mesmo quando quer reformar-se acaba por meter-se em casos complicados. Este caso vai fazer com que Poirot deixe para trás a ideia (ridícula) de plantar abóboras e de se reformar.

It was a quick read, because I already know the story from the tv-series. It's another Poirot case. Even though after trying to retire Poirot ends up in meddling with curious cases. This one will make Poirot give up of the ridiculous idea of planting pumpkins and retire.

Nora Roberts nunca desaponta em histórias rápidas de ler e de entreter. No entanto fiquei um pouco desapontada com um dos aspectos do livro - achei o desenvolvimento de uma das personagens principais (Simon Doyle) muito superficial. Mal conhecemos o background ou as motivações da personagem.

This author is perfect for quick reads and entertaining stories. In the case of this book I was a little disappointing with one thing - the character development of one of the main characters - Simon Doyle. I felt it was very superficial, we barely know anything about his past or either his motivations. 

3) The Mist by Stephen King

É um conto que está também publicado no livro Skeleton Crew. ADOREI! E não estava à espera de gostar. O Stephen King têm o dom de pôr por palavras terror de ser humano, o medo do desconhecido. Quase todas as personagens que já conheci, criadas pelo autor, são incrivelmente humanas e falíveis, ao ponto de quase podermos acreditar que aquela história que estamos a ler é real.

It's a short-story that it was first published in the book  Skeleton Crew. I love it! I wasn't expecting liking it so much. Stephen King has the gift to put into words the human terror and the fear of the unknown. Almost all characters that I already met, created by the author, are incredibly human and fallible, to the point you almost believe their stories are true.

4) Chasing Fire by Nora Roberts

Este livro é sobre uma unidade especial de bombeiros. Apesar do livro se prender com páginas infinitas sobre pormenores técnicos sobre os treinos destes bombeiros, situações em que eles estão no meio do fogo e maneiras de combater o fogo, não se enganem - continua a ser um romance. Os pormenores técnicos estendem-se um pouco demais, mas ao mesmo tempo senti que aprendi algo.
O final não foi surpreendente, já li demasiados livros da autora para me conseguir surpreender com com as histórias. Porque é que continuo a ler os livros dela? Simplesmente por em entretêm, e a maior parte têm romances... fofos.

This books is about a fireman special unit. It has endless pages with technical terms and details about their train and fire situations - but don't be fooled - it's still a romance. The technical terms might be too long, but on the other hand I felt that I learned something. The ending wasn't surprising, but most of Nora Roberts books are no longer surprising to me. Why I keep reading them? Because they entertain me a lot, and most of the romance part is... cute.

Li em conjunto com a Dora do canal Books & Movies (podem ver a opinião da Dora aqui).

Depois de ler dois romances achei que estava na altura de voltar aos thrillers. Este livro conta a história da família Moorcraft. O pai (Angus) é arquitecto, a mãe (Sarah) é jornalista freelancer. Têm duas filhas, gémeas. Iguais em tudo -  Lydia e Kirstie. A história começa uns meses após uma terrível tragédia que se abateu sobe a família. Uma das gémeas morreu num acidente. Quando a história começa os Moorcraft estão a preparar-se para deixar Londres e ir viver para uma ilha escocesa, para a casa (em estado decadente) que pertencia a avó de Angus. Tudo muda quando a gémea sobrevivente diz à mãe para que ela lhe pare de chamar aquele nome, pois ela é a outra gémea. À medida que a história do livro se desenvolve vamos descobrindo através dos testemunhos da Sarah e do Angus mais sobre a família e a tragédia que lhes aconteceu.
Apesar de me ter sentido um pouco frustrada com a personagem da Sarah durante uma grande parte do livro, no final valeu pena. Quando a história é finalmente revelada, tudo faz sentido, até a maneira como foi escrita.
Além disso este livro dava um filme de terror estupendo (se fosse bem feito, claro).

After two romances I thought it was time to change for something different. This book tells the story about Moorcraft family. Angus (the father) is an architect, Sarah is the mother and freelance journalist. They have two daughters - twins. Lydia and Kirstie. The story starts a few months after something terrible happen that disturbs the whole family. One of the twins dies in an accident. When the narrative starts the Moorcraft are preparing to leave London and to live in a Scottish island, in a decrepit house that once belong to Angus grandmother. Everything changes when the surviving twin tells her mother to stop calling her that name, because she is the other twin. Along the book we discover this family terrifying story through Sarah and Angus perspectives.
Although almost half of the book I was quite frustrated with Sarah, in the end it was worthy. When the whole story is revealed, everything makes sense, even the way the story was written.
Also, this book would be an awesome horror movie.

6) Horns by Joe Hil

Comecei a ler este livro o ano passado. Parei quase a meio. Quando descobri esta edição apaixonei-me pela capa e decidi que estava na altura de dar uma segunda oportunidade ao livro.
E se um dia acordasses e tivesses cornos a nascerem-te na cabeça? É isso que acontece a Ig (a personagem principal) deste livro. O porquê? Ig sempre foi um bom rapaz, tolerado pela comunidade em que vive, até ao dia em que a sua namorada é encontrada violada e morta. Todos acham que ele foi o criminoso, apesar de ele não o ter sido. Com os cornos Ig ganha alguns poderes que vai usar para descobrir quem cometeu o infame crime. Gostei muito da história, apesar de não estar à espera do final que teve. (Não posso dizer que tenha um final feliz, mas é o mais parecido possível que a história permitiu). Se já leram o livro vão encontrar imensos detalhes relevantes na capa, se não leram não se preocupem, não são spoilers.

I started to read this book last year. But I stopped almost half way. When I found out this edition I fell in love with the cover and decided that it was time to give it a second change.
What if one day you wake you wake up and had horns in your head? That's what happens with our main character - Ig. Why? Ig has been always a good fella, accepted by the community he lives in, until the day his girlfriend is found raped and dead. Everybody things he did it, although he didn't. With these horns Ig gains powers that will help him to find out who actually did it, and why.  I liked the book, but was surprised by the end. (I can't say it was a happy ending, but considering the story it was the closest thing). If you have read the book you will find many of little details on the cover, but if you haven't, don't worry they are not spoilers).

Não sabia o que ler para os desafios dos autores nacionais. Até que na minha estante vi o livro da Raquel. Não tenho muitas palavras a dizer sobre ele. É daqueles livros que só lidos. É sem dúvida dos livros mais bonitos que li este ano - das palavras às ilustrações (que foram feitas pela Mariana a Miserável).

8) Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne

Há 10 anos atrás recomendaram-me ler Jules Verne. E eu achei que nunca ia ter paciência para ler nada escrito pelo autor. Desde miúda que nas viagens de carro ouvimos o compositor/autor Rick Wakeman. Uma das minhas composições preferidas do autor é a Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Melhor que essa só o Return to the Centre of the Earth. Ambas são inspiradas pela obra do Jules Verne. São uma mistura de narrativa da história e música. Depois de tanto ouvir ambas achei que estava na hora de ler o original. Que gostei muito mais do que estava à espera.  Gostei tanto que estou neste momento a reconsiderar ler outros livros do autor, particularmente o 20.000 Léguas Submarinas e o Volta ao Mundo em 80 dias.

10 years ago I was recommend Jules Verne books. But I thought that I would never had the patience to read anything written by the author. Since I was a little girl, when we travel by car we listening to the musician/compositor Rick Wakeman. One of my favourites works by him is Journey to the Centre of the Earth. But maybe better than that is Return to the Centre of the Earth. Both are inspired in Jules Verne book, and are a mix between narrative and music. After so many year listen to it that I thought it was time to read the original. And I enjoy it way more than I was expecting. I like it so much that I'm considering reading other two books - Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in Eighty Days.

Desde que este livro saiu que fiquei com curiosidade de o ler. J. K. Rowling a escrever livros sobre crimes e detectives?!
Gostei, mas não achei nem muito original, nem muito a par com que se escreve hoje em dia neste género. Também achei que, no mínimo, podia ter menos umas 100 páginas, em certas alturas foca-se demasiado no detective Cormoran Strike e na sua nova secretária Robin Ellacott - em vez de nos fornecer mais detalhes sobre o caso do livro. Vou continuar a ler a trilogia/série porque tenho curiosidade em saber se os próximos livros melhoram.

Since this book was released that I was curious about it. J. K. Rowling writing a book about crime and a private detective?!
I like it, though it's not very original or even in the same page of the same genre books. I also thought it has at least 100 pages too many, because in certain times it focused too much in the detective (Cormoran Stike) and his new secretary (Robin Ellacott) - instead of the case. I will continue to read the series mainly because I'm curious if they improve.
