Listen to Audiobooks

agosto 17, 2016

- Da série A Series of Unfortunate Events escrita por Lemony Snicket ouvir o primeiro - The Bad Beginning e o segundo The Reptile Room.
Ouvi os três primeiros livros - Naked in death, Glory in Death e Immortal in Death.

Este ano ouvi The Gunslinger (o primeiro livro da série The Dark Tower) do Stephen King.

Ajudam-me a manter-me focada no que estou a fazer.

Two years ago I discovered about audiobooks. For awhile I thought it wasn't a thing I would enjoy. I like to read physical books, and usually I read fast, it didn't make much sense to me to listen, instead of reading. But I was curious to try anyway.

I was already been listening to a lot a series and films only in English. So I thought I was used to listen English speaking people. But I also knew that the first books that I choose would have to be easy to listening.

I started to listen a series called Dresden Files written by Jim Butcher. I really enjoy the reading. From this series I listen to:
1) Storm Front; 2) Fool Moon; 3) Grave Peril; 4) Summer Knight; 5) Death Masks; 6) Blood Rites; 7) Dead Beat.

To keep with what I considered simple books I read:
- Northern Lights by Philip Pullman (it was one of the only ones that I listening that were dramatized, which means that each character had his own voice. It was almost like a film, but without images). I fell in love with this story again which make me start to look for the other books in the series - which led me to some of the most beautiful books in my shelves.
- From "A Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket I listened to the first The Bad Beginning and the second The Reptile Room. This is a middle grade book, I started to read it when I was a child and they were first published in Portugal. But the books took so much time to be published that I end up not keep reading them.
- I also tried one of my most read authors - Nora Roberts, but with the pseudonym J. D. Robb. The series is called In Death and it's about a detective of the New York PD in the future. I had tried to read it in the past but for some reason wasn't getting too much into the story. But with the audio version I enjoy it more. I listened to the three first books of the series - Naked in death, Glory in death and Immortal in Death.

Then I tried to branch out and start to try other books:
- I started the series Chronicles of Nick by Sherrilyn Kenyon with the book Infinity. (I didn't continued it yet because the series have spoilers to other series writing by the author, so I have to read those other books first).
- I finished to read The Bourne Identity (the first one in the series about Jason Bourne) written by Robert Ludlum. I can tell you that the book and even the audio version are better than the movie (and I liked the movie before I started to read the books).
- I try a different genre - thrillers - with the book The Cove (from the series FBI thrillers) written by Catherine Coulter.

Last year I listened to the whole trilogy of The Lord of the Rings written by J. R. R. Tolkien. (which is more or less 50 hours). It was the first time that listened/read this trilogy in English and liked way more than in Portuguese.

This year I listened to The Gunslinger (the first book from the series The Dark Tower) by Stephen King. And I listened again to The Lord of the Rings.

What I learned by listening to these audibooks?
- I learned that my best learning method has always been through audio or by listening to someone explaining or telling something. But, I always had to be doing something else at the same time. It could be taking notes, drawing or making something that I was able to split my attention in two.
I listened to all these books while I was working at the computer - creating graphics, drawings, illustrating, creating planners, etc. They help me focus on what I'm doing.
Why are they more efective than music, TV-shows, films or even Youtube videos? Because I don't have to stop to change them, or get curious to see the images. I can work for many hours straight, focused on what I'm doing and while I'm reading at the same time.
I know it's a method that won't work with everyone, some people listen to these kind of books while they exercise, or when they commute to their jobs/school. To me this the best method to keep concentrate while draw and designing.
What's your experience with audibooks?
